Is paraformaldehyde necessary?

Hello! Is the step with 4% (4C) paraformaldehyde necessary for ISH on paraffin  tissue sections? I have a RNA probe. Many thanks ???

If you do not fix you cannot process to paraffin. The tissue will be macerated by the sudden dehydration of the alcohols.
