Description: Lamins are the major components of the nuclear lamina which underlies the nuclear envelope of eukaryotic cells. lamin B is a structural component of the long-sought-after spindle matrix that promotes microtubule assembly and organization in mitosis. Inspection of the deduced amino acid sequence of lamin B revealed the presence in coil 1B of the alpha-helical domain of a leucine heptad repeat region. Lamin B assembled into a matrix-like network in mitosis through a process that depended on the presence of the guanosine triphosphate-bound form of the small guanosine triphosphatase Ran.
