ABC of Safety in the Biological Sciences
RDO - RAPID DECALCIFYING AGENT
SYNONYMS
None known.
GENERAL PRECAUTIONS
Keep away from eyes and skin.
Avoid inhalation and ingestion.
Keep away from heat or naked flames.
Keep away from oxidising materials.
Keep away from metals.
Wash hands thoroughly after handling.
CHARACTERISTICS
Translucent liquid with a variable amount of suspended dark
precipitate.
HEALTH HAZARD DATA
The active ingredient in RDO is hydrochloric acid. It is a
corrosive and a strong irritant. The vapour may also be
corrosive and irritating. Skin sensitisation cam occur. A splash
to the eye will cause burning. Inhalation may cause coughing and
choking with possible ulceration of the respiratory tract.
Ingestion will cause burning and diarrhoea. Wash thoroughly
after fixation before treating with decalcifier. Hydrogen
chloride and formaldehyde produce a carcinogenic compound,
bischloromethyl ether.
TREATMENTS
Skin - Immediately wash the affected area with soap or mild
detergent and large amounts of water until all evidence of the
chemical has been removed (approximately 15 minutes). If
irritation persists or dermatitis develops seek medical advice.
Remove contaminated clothing and shoes and decontaminate before
re-use.
Eyes - Immediately wash the affected eye with large amounts of
water until all evidence of the chemical has been removed
(approximately 15 minutes). If irritation or pain persists seek
immediate medical attention.
Inhalation - Remove from the area of exposure to fresh air. Keep
warm and allow to rest. Seek immediate medical advice.
Ingestion - Never give anything by mouth if the victim is losing
consciousness, is unconscious or convulsing. Rinse the mouth
thoroughly with water. DO NOT induce vomiting. Give milk
to drink or egg whites. Seek immediate medical attention.
INCOMPATIBILITY
Incompatible with oxidising agents. Heating produces toxic fumes
of hydrogen chloride. Hydrogen chloride and formaldehyde produce
a carcinogenic compound, bischloromethyl ether.
STORAGE
Store in a cool, dry atmosphere away from heat and incompatible
substances.
HANDLING
Wear protective clothing. A long sleeved laboratory coat or gown
with elasticised wrist bands, rubber gloves and safety goggles
as a minimum standard.
DISPOSAL
Waste material may be disposed of to sewer with large quantities
of water.
ENVIRONMENT
This is a biodegradable product and should not cause any
environmental problem.
