ABC of Safety in the Biological Sciences

AIR CONDITIONING

Air conditioning systems should be designed to cope with the specific requirements of each laboratory. As a base, each person requires a minimum of 7.5 L/s fresh air (Australian Standard AS1668, Part 2).

Special attention should be paid to the design of systems for microbiology. These should be of the nonrecirculation type and have separate filtered exhaust ducting with vents remote from air intakes (Australian Standard AS2243, Part 3).

A general standard of five air changes per hour is recommended in the United Kingdom.89

Included are some general guidelines to the quantity of air flow/person and their space requirements.
