ABC of Safety in the Biological Sciences

BLOOD PRODUCTS

Reagents used mainly in immunohistochemistry, which are prepared from human or animal blood products may contain microorganisms, particularly viruses and are thus potentially hazardous.

Precautions essential in handling these products include wearing protective clothing, a long sleeved laboratory coat or gown, rubber gloves, safety goggles and a face mask, covering open cuts and using a laminar flow hood or pathogen handling cabinet. In addition avoid splashes, clean up spills, disinfect spill areas and warn others of any spills.
