ABC of Safety in the Biological Sciences
EMERGENCY PLAN (Disaster Plan)
Laboratories should have clearly displayed in the work area an emergency plan13 showing the location of emergency equipment as well as the position of the laboratory within the building. In particular the plan should display the location and type of fire extinguishers, fire blankets and fire hoses, alarms, the emergency exit (which may not be the same exit as used under normal conditions) and any emergency telephone number which mobilises an emergency team or informs the appropriate authority.
The laboratory safety officer should ensure that all members of the staff are familiar with the emergency plan and their roles in an emergency. The safety officer and a deputy should also have a location map of all staff working in the laboratory, so that all can be accounted for during any emergency.
