ABC of Safety in the Biological Sciences

ENZYMES

Enzymes are high molecular weight proteins which regulate the biochemical processes in an organism.28

The handling of commercial enzymes is not considered hazardous except for the possibility of an allergic reaction to particular enzymes occurring in some individuals. Enzymes prepared from animal products may not have been checked by manufacturers for bacteria or viral contamination. If precautions are used similar to those for handling body fluids, the handling of enzymes is unlikely to cause concern.
