ERGONOMICS

Ergonomics is the science relating humans to their working environment through the anatomic, physiologic, psychologic and mechanical principles which affect the efficient use of human energy.71 It has a practical use in medical laboratories in the design of every feature of the laboratory-bench height, chairs, lighting, noise, temperature, equipment (dials, handles etc.) as well as computer and microscope work stations.72 73

Ergonomically designed equipment will reduce occupational pain, discomfort, fatigue, accidents and general dissatisfaction which all lead to loss of production and loss of quality product.74 75
