ABC of Safety in the Biological Sciences

FOOTWEAR

Safe footwear appropriate to the particular hazard present in your laboratory should be selected and worn. Histotechnologists should wear covered shoes especially during microtomy. Covered shoes are recommended wear whenever acids or solvents are carried or used.

When handling liquid nitrogen it is recommended that slipon shoes be worn in case of spills, slipon shoes can be rapidly removed. When wearing long boots always remember to keep protective pants outside of the boots in case of spills. This will remove or minimise hazards to cover legs and feet.

Open shoes, high heels, sandals or thongs are not recommended as footwear in a biological sciences laboratory.
