ABC of Safety in the Biological Sciences
HAND BASINS
Hand basins should be located near the exit
of each laboratory and in areas where specimens and request forms
are handled. Wrist-levers or foot-pedals should be fitted and an
integral eye wash facility is recommended.78 Basins
should not be used for any purpose other than hand washing.93
Soap or sanitised detergent is best provided in liquid form from a
dispenser operated by a lever and situated in the immediate vicinity
of the basin.
Wash hands after removing gloves, before leaving the laboratory, before and after contact with patients, before eating and immediately after accidental contact with any possible source of contamination.
