ABC of Safety in the Biological Sciences

HEALTH and STAFF

Prevention of occupational ill health and injury forms an essential component of laboratory management.94 Newly appointed personnel and those returning to work after a prolonged absence or illness should be provided with health assessments and counselled on requirements for periodic health surveillance where appropriate. Vaccination programmes should be available particularly to high risk groups such as those exposed to unfixed tissue samples.

In addition various services which provide an awareness of personal safety and well being can be offered. Examples include:

  • Assessment of hazards (physical, chemical, biological and psychological) and advice on control or reduction of such hazards.
  • Anticipation of hazards from newly introduced technology and processes.
  • Advice on personal protective equipment.
    • Investigation of accidents/incidents to develop strategies to reduce such occurrences.
    • Assessment of workplace with special reference to ergonomics.
