HYDROXIDES

Hydroxides are corrosives.9 When handling these substances wear protective clothing comprising rubber gloves, face shield and laboratory coat as a minimum standard of protection. Spilt solids can be swept up, diluted and neutralised with 6M hydrochloric acid before discharging to the sewer with a large excess of water (if local regulations allow). Neutralise a spill in situ before removal. Should there be contact with these substances wash the affected area with copious quantities of cold water for a minimum of 15 minutes (see Chemical splash to the body). Seek medical assistance if necessary.20
