ABC of Safety in the Biological Sciences
NOISE
Noise induced hearing loss occurs when the sound receptors (hair cells in the cochlea) are damaged or destroyed by short bursts of intense noise or loud noise of long duration. The recommended level of exposure in an eight hour shift is 85dB (decibels).103 If exposure levels exceed this limit hearing protection is required.
