Ultra violet lamps are used for demonstrating calcium, banding techniques in cytogenetics, sterilisation of laminar flow or bio safety units and in U/V fluorescence microscopy.

U/V light can damage the eye causing conjunctival burning.52 No attempt should ever be made to repair U/V producing equipment or re-centre light sources, without wearing safety glasses. Never look at unshielded U/V light. If a U/V burn occurs seek medical attention immediately.
